Raby Castle

Raby Castle has nice walled gardens in its park. They feature two of these old yew hedges, which look really impressive. Also there's a wide variety of flowering plants... ...and trees which were in full bloom. One thing they are especially proud of is this fig tree that was brought from Italy in 1786. The fig lives in its own private greenhouse. The castle's main entrance is protected by a now-empty moat and a wall that would have been much higher in medieval times. Two ponds, the low pond (seen here) and the high pond (behind me) are all that's left of the moat.
