Sunrise at Buttermere Lake. We were there for a long weekend, and this is the beginning of day 1.
Best possible weather in the Lake District!
One of the Herdwick sheep, they are so funny with their wooly legs!
Buttermere Lake and village.
Looking over Bleaberry Tarn towards the Red Pike (755m), which we walked up then.
Autumn colours in the valley of River Liza, into which we proceeded from the Red Pike...
only to climb up at the other side, towards the Pillar (892m). Some sramble was that! When we reached the top, we decided we definitely wouldn’t be going down THAT way again!
Looking over the hills.
Rob, Joe, Daniel, Mike and myself on top of the Pillar.
What happened to the sunshine?
The weather changes quite quickly here. The sheep don’t seem to mind at all. Less than an hour later, the sun was out again, and we were full of new energy, which lead us to go up to the High Stile when we reached the Scarth Gap Pass, instead of going down into Buttermere valley to walk back to the hostel along the lake. No more pictures for the rest of the day because it got dark quite quickly and when we reached the High Stile, we hat to get out our torches and still couldn’t find the path down, which saw us scrambling downhill on the most direct route towards Bleaberry Tarn, where we met the path and followed it back to Buttermere. The advantage of this late return was that dinner was ready and the showers were all free :-)
Buttermere Youth Hostel.
The second day we (Claudia, sarah, Rich and me) started our trip walking up the Haystacks (597).
On a cold and frosty morning...
... we had again a beautiful view over the Western Lake District...
... and its snow-covered peaks.
After climbing High Crag, High Stile and Red Peak again and after a short visit to Starling Dodd, we went down towards Crummock Water along a small stream that had may small waterfalls.
All the falls together are called Scale Force, with the highest sinlge fall over 36m (see Wikipedia). Then it was back to Buttermere, into the pub, and eventually back to Durham.
